With the introduction of Big Hill Farm here at GAC, we've heard more and more about "sustainable agriculture" - but I still wasn't exactly sure what that meant. Wikipedia (a true fount of knowledge) explains that sustainable agriculture, as a term, means an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term:
- satisfy human food and fiber needs
- enhance enviornmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends
- make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls
- sustain the economic viability of farm operations
- enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole
In fact Gustavus' own Martin Lang and Ethan Marzhausen have produced a documentary titled "Farm Forward" that will be heavily featured at the conference (and showcases the work of student farmers at Big Hill Farm)!!
Come onto the CC for a registration form (Due Feb. 17th) or register online at www.sfa-mn.org - All this knowledge (and the delicious Farmer's Market happening during lunch) can be yours for the student price of $10! Make a day of it!
