Let me run you through a
common conversation with people I meet who find out I’m a college student:
Person: What’s your
major?
Me: English.
Person: Do you want to
work at a newspaper?
Me: Not really.
Person: Oh, do you want
to go into teaching?
Me: No.
Person: So…what do you
want to do?
Me: I’m not really sure.
Person: Oh, well…that’s
okay! You’re young, and you’ll find something!
Me: Yeah…of course…right…
No matter who I talk to,
the conversation follows this basic format. Apparently, there are only two jobs
out there for English majors: teaching and newspaper journalism. Now, I know
that there are more jobs out there for people like me, people. But what are
they? What are the options for college student who want to write?
I am about to find out. I
am making it my mission to find different options for those who are interested
in writing like I am. Whether you are interested in fiction, creative non-fiction,
poetry, or journalism, I hope to find outlets where you can express your
creative side. By talking to those in the field and those working their way up,
I will be able to obtain an insider’s view that might
just shed some light on what the rest of us can do with our lives.
